The departure of frontwoman Natalie Merchant was a serious blow to the 10,000 Maniacs, but the band -- with new vocalist Mary Ramsey and the return of founding guitarist John Lombardo -- have picked up the pieces. "Love Among the Ruins" is brimming with the band's signature lush guitars, Hammond organ, strings and harmonies.
Ramsey's voice isn't as bright or limber as Merchant's, but she can hold her own on "Even With My Eyes Closed" and "Rainy Day." Unfortunately, the band has lost any emotional bite it once had. "Love" is pretty to listen to, but it's ultimately devoid of passion.
